Current Clean Air Campuses

LaGuardia Community College

LaGuardia Community College (Long Island City) is an urban community college operating under the City University of New York. LaGuardia Community College educated faculty and students about air quality through its Earth Day events in April 2009, and will host a Clean Air NY staff member for an on-campus presentation in the near future. The college also displays materials promoting clean air actions and announcing Air Quality Action Days.

SUNY Orange

SUNY Orange (Middletown) is a 2-year institution of higher education established by the authority of the State of New York and sponsored by Orange County. SUNY Orange will explore the use of incentives to reward students and employees who carpool. The school will also educate students and employees about improving New York's air quality through an on-campus presentation in connection with its Students Activities Day. Students can learn about clean air actions year round, as Clean Air NY materials will be prominently displayed in the Shepard Student Center.

Stony Brook University

Stony Brook University (Stony Brook, NY) is Long Island's premiere public research university. With Stony Brook Southampton, its campus devoted to sustainability, Stony Brook is at the forefront of academic environmentalism. The University informs students, faculty and staff members about clean air initiatives through email, printed notifications, information posted in common areas and its Web site, as well as in the school publications Happenings and Statesman. Each year, Stony Brook sponsors EarthStock, a campus-wide Earth Day event with lectures and seminars from faculty members and representatives from many of the area's prominent environmental organizations. This is an ideal venue for students, faculty, staff and the public to learn about Clean Air NY.

Bard College

Bard College (Annandale-on-Hudson) is a private, 4-year liberal arts and sciences college. The school is situated in a rural area between two small villages, which can lead to increased car travel. Bard encourages students and staff to go car-free through its electric bike-sharing program. Two bikes are used by staff members, and the other two are available for all students to borrow during daylight hours.

Mount St. Mary College

Mount Saint Mary College (Newburgh) is a 4-year liberal arts college in the Hudson Valley that ensures its students and employees are able to take appropriate steps towards cleaner air. As of fall 2009, Mount Saint Mary offers preferred parking spaces for carpoolers to encourage ridesharing. The school also posts Air Quality Action Day updates so that students and employees can take appropriate actions on days when the air quality is particularly unhealthy. The Mount Alliance for Green Initiatives on Campus (M.A.G.I.C.), a grassroots, multi-constituent group and a student-run club, is the driving force behind all of the college's sustainability efforts. M.A.G.I.C. spearheaded the initiative that led to an Honorable Mention in the NuRide Earth Day Race to the Finish in 2009.

New York Institute of Technology

New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) is a non-profit independent, private institution of higher education with campuses in Manhattan, Old Westbury and throughout the world. NYIT, which hosted Clean Air NY at its Earth Day Celebration in April 2009, continually promotes healthy, clean air travel to its students, faculty and staff via articles, presentations and events. NYIT also shares news about all of its Air Quality Action Day initiatives with its community members. "The easiest way to solve an ongoing problem is to stop creating it. The simple steps promoted by Clean Air NY work and are free," says Frank Zeman, director of NYIT's Center for Metropolitan Sustainability.

Fashion Institute of Technology

The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) is an internationally recognized college of art, design, business and technology. FIT participates in the Clean Air Campaign through its work with CommuterLink to distribute information to faculty, staff and students about green commuting options including public transportation, carpooling, walking and bicycling. FIT has accepted the Mayor's Challenge as part of GreeNYC to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent over ten years. The college has begun a multiyear initiative to replace roofs on campus with "green roofs" that will reduce FIT's carbon footprint and increase energy efficiency. In addition, FIT participated in the Clinton Global Initiative University conference in 2009, where its proposal was lauded by President Clinton. For the past several years, the college has hosted a sustainability summit. Clean Air NY was a part of the event in April 2009 and has made plans to return in 2010.

St. John's University

St. John's University is one of America's leading Catholic universities - recognized for its superb academic programs, diverse student life, Big East excitement and New York vitality. St. John's is committed to reducing greenhouse gases and in April 2009 hosted Clean Air NY at its Earth Day celebration. The University has invited Clean Air NY to return for an on-campus presentation and continues to promote the benefits of reducing the amount of pollutants released in the atmosphere. One feasible way of doing that is carpooling, and a number of employees are already doing so. The University is looking into expanding the program through its participation in Clean Air NY.
